Northern Norway Photography — A Winter Story in the Arctic

Northern Norway Photography — A Winter Story in the Arctic

Northern Norway Photography: Chasing the Aurora Borealis

Years ago, my husband showed me the clear dome-shaped dwellings of Lapland, Finland. The places where you could experience the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) from the comfort of a heated room and a cozy bed. From that moment on, I dreamed of an escape like that in real life.

The funny thing? Winter isn’t my husband’s favorite season. So, I decided to turn this dream into a solo adventure. While I didn’t choose Finland this time, I set my sights on Northern Norway photography, hoping to witness that epic light swirling overhead. Searching for an up close and in person experience.

Northern Norway Photographer Experience: Aurora Hunting in Tromsø

I spent three nights chasing the aurora across Northern Norway. On my first night, I joined a locally known tour group, Wandering Owl. The conditions were promising, clear skies and a high KP index!

Wandering Owl delivered an incredible experience. They provided a full snowsuit, boots, and created a cozy atmosphere with a campfire as we waited. We were served vegan soup, hot cocoa, and cider while listening to stories in anticipation.

After a few hours… there they were.

As a Northern Norway photographer, this was the moment I came for. It exceeded every expectation. For over an hour, the aurora danced across the sky in a full, breathtaking display.

That evening, I stayed at the Scandic Ishavshotel in the city center of Tromsø. While the rooms were comfortable, they felt slightly dated. The central location, however, made it convenient. Though winter in Tromsø is incredibly busy. Lastly, check out those underground cave parking tunnels. Another first for me for sure!

Norway Photography Travel: Scenic Drive to the Lyngen Fjords

Ready for something quieter, I headed to my next destination. This location was known for its peaceful and remote beauty. The drive was long but unforgettable. Surrounded by dramatic mountains, I found myself stopping constantly to capture the landscape. These moments are what define Norway photography at its finest.

Getting there also required a ferry ride. While quick and efficient the ferry fills up fast. Arriving early is essential.

Northern Norway Photography Retreat: Aurora Fjords Stay

My next stay was at Aurora Fjords, connected to the Arctic Spirit Distillery. This just so happens to be the northernmost distillery in the world. Even if you cannot complete the Arctic Distillery tour, you can still request for a small drink package to be delivered for your stay!

As a photographer in Northern Norway, I had envisioned capturing the aurora from my private cabin hot tub overlooking the Lyngen Fjords. Or from the comfort of cozy glass front framed tiny house. This time, the lights didn’t appear.

But the experience was no less magical. Sitting in silence, surrounded by fjords and sky, soaking in the stillness. It was a different kind of beauty that I needed. A reminder that Northern Norway photography isn’t only about the aurora, but about presence, landscape, and atmosphere.

Norway Photography Adventure: Driving to Sommarøy Island

For my final night, I headed in the opposite direction, to the island of Sommarøy. Having grown up in North Dakota, I’m no stranger to winter driving. But this journey? It was intense. Heavy snowfall, low visibility, darkness. All encompassed with wildlife like reindeer and moose to watch for. This drive is not for the faint of heart.

Finally, I spotted the illuminated one-lane bridge leading to the island. It was a surreal and rewarding moment. The Sommarøy Arctic Hotel Tromsø offers a restaurant and bar with late-night dining, and accommodations spread across the property with varying views.

Given the storm, I knew the aurora wouldn’t make an appearance that night. Still, I was grateful to experience this remote island and complete the journey safely.

Northern Norway Photography Reflections: A Winter Dream Realized

While I only witnessed the aurora one out of three nights, the experience exceeded expectations in ways I didn’t anticipate. I connected with my heritage, challenged myself through solo travel, and experienced the raw, powerful beauty of winter in the Arctic.

Northern Norway photography is more than chasing the Northern Lights. It’s about embracing the unknown, capturing fleeting moments, and finding beauty even when things don’t go as planned.

And for that, this solo journey was everything I had dreamed of and more.
